The Industry's Most Cost-Effective Bootable Hardware RAID Solution for CPU-Resource Hungry Servers

HighPoint’s SSD6200 Series Host RAID Controllers are the industry’s most cost-effective, bootable NVMe Storage solutions for high-performance, mission critical server platforms. The compact single-width 2 and 4 port NVMe Host RAID controllers support off-the-shelf M.2 SSDs of any capacity, and can be easily integrated into any industry standard x86 Intel or AMD based server or workstation with a free PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 x8 or x16 slot.

Replace & Upgrade Bootable SATA SSD Solutions with NVMe Hardware RAID Technology

Although SATA SSDs have proven to be a reliable way to improve the performance of bootable volumes for a variety of computing applications, the SATA storage interface is legacy technology, and is unsuitable for workflows that require a data transfer rate in excess of 600MB/s. By contrast, a single, NVMe SSD is capable of outperforming an entire array of conventional SSDs. As a result, most modern computing platforms include an M.2 port for the systems boot drive.

However, the NVMe controllers integrated into the vast majority of modern server and workstation platforms come with major caveats; most are completely dependent on the system hardware, often limit customers to a specific make or model of NVMe SSD, place restrictions on possible PCIe configurations due to Bifurcation requirements, and rely on an OS-controlled software RAID solution for data redundancy.

HighPoint NVMe Hardware RAID solutions were designed to address all of these concerns. Our SSD6200 series NVMe RAID AICs are ideal for mission critical enterprise server platforms. Unlike purely software based VROC and AMD RAID solutions, SSD6200 controllers operate independent of the host hardware and operating system; they process all RAID related calculations internally and allow the enterprise server to focus all of its CPU and memory resources on mission critical tasks and performance-hungry applications.

In addition, SSD6200 controllers require no Bifurcation support. The controller hardware architecture handles all lane allocation directly, and will distribute the maximum available bandwidth to each of the hosted NVMe SSDs. And unlike conventional SAS/SATA based bootable RAID solutions, SSD6200 series controllers directly host the storage media. Customers will not need to allocate drive bays to the RAID solution, nor invest in a dedicated server rack and any required power, cooling and cabling accessories.

Driverless Installation for a Wide Spectrum of Enterprise & Virtualization OS Platforms

SSD6200 series RAID AICs are natively supported by all major Virtual Machine platforms including VMware, Proxmox and Hyper-V, and current enterprise operating systems, such as Windows Server, Linux distributions and FreeBSD.

This enables SSD6200 series controllers to function as plug-and-play hardware RAID solutions. No special procedures or software applications are required; SSDs and array hosted by SSD6200 series controllers will be automatically recognized by each platform’s default storage management interface.

Native driver support also simplifies routine kernel updates and OS patches. Unlike non-native, unembedded devices, SSD6200 series can remain in operation during the upgrade procedure, without fear of data loss or extended downtime.

Enterprise Class Monitoring & Serviceability

If the Edge device was designed to interface with a network for the purpose of offloading data, the storage unit employed by the Edge platform must be able to keep pace with available ethernet bandwidth. For example, a storage solution designed for integration into a 200GigE network infrastructure would ideally be capable of delivering 25,000MB/s of transfer performance. SAS/SATA based solutions are impractical for this requirement – the sheer number of drives needed to meet this bandwidth rating would necessitate a multi-u rackmount solution, which would not physically fit into most AV applications. NVMe is the logical choice – the compact form factor and 10 to 1 performance advantage can easily meet or exceed the bandwidth requirement without having to worry about size constraints.

The HighPoint SSD7540 PCIe Gen4 x16  8-Channel NVMe RAID AIC can be installed into any Edge or Industrial computing platform with an avaiable PCIe 4.0 x16 slot. Applications that require a more compact solution can opt for the 4-Channel SSD7505.

Industry’s Most Comprehensive NVMe RAID Management Suite

A wide range of administrative tools are available for SSD6200 series controllers. The suite is modular, and allows customers to select which tools are appropriate for the task at hand. Each utility works in isolation, but all can be installed simultaneously if desired.

The UEFI Tool is a command line interface designed for use at the pre-OS level, and can be used to configure arrays prior to OS installation.

The HII (human interface infrastructure) compliant BIOS interface is natively supported by a wide range of server class motherboards and computing platforms. It provides RAID creation and maintenance options via the motherboard’s standard BIOS menus.

The WebGUI and CLI applications are installed via a single software package, and are designed for use at the OS level. The WebGUI is an intuitive graphical user interface that is compatible with any modern web browser. The CLI command line interface is designed for use with Linux and FreeBSD terminal and MS DOS windows. Both tools include a selection of advanced monitoring and management tools include SHI (storage health inspector) with active SMART monitoring and TBW tracking, and an Event Log with configurable Email Notification.

Integrated Hardware RAID Switch: The SSD6202 and SSD6200A/B Variants feature a Hardware switch for instant RAID configuration. No OS, BIOS interface or software application is required; administrators can instantly configure RAID 1 mirroring for maximum security, RAID 0 striping for max performance and capacity, or enable each hosted SSDs to operate as an independent disk, without having to physically install the controller.
